Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

What is PLAR?

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a process that acknowledges the skills, knowledge, and experience individuals have acquired outside of traditional classroom settings. If you’ve been working in a particular industry for several years but lack formal qualifications, PLAR offers an opportunity to gain recognition for your expertise and potentially reduce the time required to achieve a certification.

Who is it For?

PLAR is specifically designed for individuals who have worked in a field for many years but lack formal training or qualifications. It is also beneficial for managers and team leaders who wish to certify their team’s existing skills without requiring them to repeat content they have already mastered.

How to Engage in PLAR?

  • Reach out to us to express your interest and receive initial guidance.
  • Gather documentation that highlights your work experience, skills, training, and achievements relevant to your field.
  • Your portfolio will then be submitted for review by the TVET Council of Barbados.
  • The TVET Council will assess your competencies against national standards.
  • Based on the assessment, you may be granted exemptions from specific components of the certification programme.
