Use of Force Policy and Practice
About the programme
This course is designed to meet the minimum requirements set forth for law enforcement personnel. The primary objective is to enhance participants’ understanding of use of force laws, agency-specific policies, and critical decision-making processes. Through facilitated discussions, case study analyses, and scenario-based training, the course aims to reinforce the principles of lawful and ethical use of force in various law enforcement situations.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this programme, students will have gained the knowledge and skills necessary to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of statutory and case law governing the use of force in law enforcement.
- Interpret and apply individual agency use of force policies and procedures.
- Understand and uphold the principle of reverence for human life in all use of force situations.
- Implement de-escalation techniques and verbal communication strategies to reduce the need for force.
- Recognize the duty to intercede when witnessing inappropriate or excessive use of force by colleagues.
- Demonstrate the ability to render first aid following a use of force incident.
- Apply critical decision-making processes in determining appropriate levels of force based on situational factors.

Course Outline
Assessment
Assessment of the course is determined by course work which accounts for 40% of the overall grade. As well as the final written examination which accounts for 60%.

Instructional Approach
This course will involve a mix of lectures, discussions and presentations. To benefit fully, a student’s participation in all aspects of the course is required.

Pre-requisites
Applicants must have at least three (3) CSEC passes, including English Language, or equivalent qualifications. Mature applicants without formal qualifications may be considered based on relevant work experience.
